Colombia and China signed on Wednesday in Beijing a memorandum of understanding that turns the country into a tourist destination approved by the Chinese government, which will facilitate the arrival of groups of tourists from the Asian giant South American country.
Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism of Colombia, Luis Guillermo Plata, and the general director of the National Tourism Administration, Shako View, signed the document.
“This agreement puts Colombia as one of the countries with approved destination, helping to boost the sector,” said Plata.
However, the Colombian responsible regretted that obstacles remain, as the country’s ignorance and lack of direct air link to the full capacity to develop.
“China began to travel. Tourism of Colombia, China is still young but has a high potential,” said the ministrocolombiano.
The Asian giant is the fourth source of tourists worldwide, behind Germany, Britain and the United States, and according to projections, it is estimated that some 47 million Chinese made international tourism in 2009 and the figure will reach 65 million in 2012.
Over 130 countries have the status of tourist destination in China and between Latin America are Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Chile, Uruguay and Costa Rica.
According to the Embassy of Colombia in Beijing, 4,000 Chinese tourists visit annually the South American country-data almost triple the 1,500 who did three years ago, but still much more Colombians who come to China, 20,000 in 2009 alone.
Chinese visitors to Colombia used to be an entrepreneur with a technical profile that identifies business opportunities in Colombia and Latin America, as Colombia advocates expanding the range of options through bundling with Colombia and other countries in the area find synergies, and Peru for a “package Andean” or Jamaica for a “package Caribbean.”
“Colombia is making a huge effort to integrate Asia, beyond the speech. We are taking decisive and definitive steps to achieve it,” said Plata, emphasizing the regional importance of South Korea, Japan and China.
The tourism agreement signed today announced during the visit of Chinese Vice President Xi Jinxing, to Bogotá in March last year and the two parties as developed in recent months.
