If you’re after a trip away to Australia, consider Sydney, Australia’s most populous city. Situated on the South East coast, Sydney is home to around 4.5 million inhabitants, and with good reason, having so much to offer, whether as a home or a holiday destination.

Sydney’s Roots

Sydney was established in 1788 as a British colony, the first in Australia. At its time of being established, Sydney was to be used as a penal colony.  But, enough of the history lessons here. If you want to find out more about Sydney and Australia, then you should begin by checking out the harbourside quarter where it all began.  Visitors can take tours finding out all about Sydney’s colourful convict history.  On the tours, you can also hear about the stories of individuals as well as check out the various ghost tours around the area for a spooky scene setting start to your trip.

While here, there’s so much beauty to see, but not only that, you can learn so much about Sydney’s rich history and the roots of its earliest inhabitants, the Aboriginal people. Don’t feel pressure either way however, as while there is a lot to learn about the past, Sydney is also very much a city about the present and future, notably having come within the top 30 cities of innovation in the world. Adding to that, Sydney is also considered by Mercer Human Resource Consulting, and The Economist, to be among the top 10 cities in the world to live in!

The Harbour Area

While around the harbour, you can lighten the mood with either a walk around to catch in the sights, or, if you’re feeling lavish, and you can find your sea legs, you can also take one of the many chartered sailing yachts out of the harbour for a seafront tour, catching the various sites such as the spectacular Sydney Opera House.  Those a little more daring and adventurous can also hire out kayaks around the amazing Sydney Harbour Bridge.  If you don’t feel like doing the work yourself however, there are also a number of ferries around the area that can take you out around the sites, leaving you to enjoy them and some food and drinks at the same time!

Head to Manly

Take the Ferry to Manly, between the ocean surf and gentle harbour where you can soak up the sun in the surrounding beaches, learn to scuba-dive in Cabbage Tree Bay, or simply sit in the sand and have a paddle or swim around the waterfront.  There are also a number of promenades and streets perfect for walking or even cycling around.

While here, check out the local cafes and eateries as well as the vintage clothes stores where you might pick up a bargain!  There are lots of great shops around so be sure to make enough time to get yourself or some loved ones some gifts.

If you are here for a spot of shopping, think about how you’re paying for the items – you never know what extra bargains you could be in line for.  Paying by credit card in some shops or restaurants may get you discounts in and around the city.  Compare credit cards and their offers to see if you could get some added benefit from your spending.
